Master of Science in Community/Public Nursing & Master of Public Health in Urban Public Health (MS/MPH)

The concurrent Master of Science in Community/Public Nursing and Master of Public Health in Urban Public Health (MS/MPH) is offered through The Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing in conjunction with the School of Public Health. The 57-credit master’s degree program prepares nurses in public health careers to enter career leadership roles in community and population health in settings including community-based programs, clinics and public health agencies. Students of the program have the opportunity to apply learned knowledge and research findings to practice through coursework and clinical experience. Graduates of the MS/MPH program meet criteria requirements for board certification as an Advanced Public Health Nurse by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. The program consists of core coursework in nursing, coursework taken at the School of Public Health, and additional elective and specialization courses.

Master of Science in Community/Public Health Nursing

The 42 credit Master of Science in Community/Public Health Nursing (MS) degree is offered through the Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing to prepare public health nurses with the skills needed to assume leadership roles in community and population health. The program emphasizing development of advanced community-based practice skills with coursework in public policy, leadership and research methods. The core curriculum is completed with other graduate students in nursing, with additional specialization and elective courses completed at the School of Public Health. Electives may be chosen from any graduate program at Hunter College. Graduates of the program are prepared to contribute to the constantly changing healthcare environment and are prepared to work in:

Master of Science in Nursing Administration and Master of Public Administration

The dual degree MS/MPA program prepares nurses for a variety of careers of leadership in many healthcare settings. Coursework emphasizes management and policy in nursing and healthcare and requires students to complete coursework in both nursing and public administration. There are a number of electives that can be completed at both schools as well as specialization coursework and 500 hours of clinical experience. Students of the program can choose from two areas of concentration in public health:

Hunter Graduate College

School of Public Health

The School of Public Health at Hunter College is a public research college and a part of the City University of New York (CUNY) system. The School is located on Third Avenue in Manhattan, New York City and offers 4 doctoral programs, 12 master’s programs and 2 bachelor’s programs. The programs at the School of Urban Public Health allow students to improve public health by addressing public health problems including: asthma, HIV, lack of nutrition, substance abuse, obesity, violence, heart disease and cancer. Master of Public Health

The Master of Public Health (MPH) from the School of Public Health focuses on creating good health in the local community through education, research and promoting positive health. Public health professionals play essential roles in the preparation for emergencies and responding to them. Coursework for the program studies human relations, living conditions and diseases in order to develop solutions for healthier living. Public health professionals will enter careers of service in preventing illnesses and diseases from occurring through healthy practices in local health departments, non-governmental organizations, within medical facility working with patients and their families, at colleges and universities maintaining and improving student health. The School of Public Health offers the following areas of concentration:

The Community Health Education Specialization prepares students with the skills and knowledge to plan, implement and evaluate community health solutions to deal with the social and behavioral health threats. Graduates of the program enter careers in local, state and federal health agencies, NFO health organizations, hospitals and policy and advocacy organizations. They work as managers, administrators, researchers, planners, health educators, environmental and occupational health specialists, public health nutritionists, and community health nurses in diverse locations.

The Environmental and Occupational and Health Sciences Specialization prepares students with the skills to recognize, evaluate and control environmental and occupational threats to health. Graduates of the program work in local, state and federal environmental and occupational health agencies, labor unions, consulting firms, health and safety programs and businesses.

The Epidemiology and Biostatistics Specialization prepares students to design and lead population health studies and to apply findings in research in order to improve the health of urban populations. It consists of two specific areas of concentration: one in Epidemiology and one in Biostatistics. The concentration in epidemiology focuses on the principles, methods, strengths of study designs in epidemiology to collaborate applied population health research, interpret epidemiologic findings, communicate findings in research and apply findings to develop evidence-based interventions to improve population health. Biostatistics students will focus on the awareness and understanding of advanced statistical methods required to apply core and intermediate level statistical methods to public health endeavors including statistical analysis, data management, interpretation, and presenting analytical results via computing technology. Graduates of both specializations typically find careers in government and private health agencies, industry, and research institutions.

The Health Policy and Management Specialization prepares MPH students with the skills to plan and implement public health programs in varied settings to analyze the impact of health and non-health related policies on population health and advocate for policies that will promote the health of populations. Emphasis for the program is the approach to policy and management in urban settings and the economic dimensions of health policy. Graduates of the program will enter careers as managers, policy analysts or policy advocates.

The Public Health Nutrition Specialization prepares students with the skills to promote nutrition for the health of the population. Coursework allows students to assess essential nutritional needs of various populations to plan and implement nutrition and food programs and manage the nutritional programs in community and industry settings. The specialization curriculum is designed for those who are Registered Dietitians (RDs) as well as those without this credential. Graduates of the program enter careers in clinics, hospitals settings, community programs, government health departments (including local, state, or federal) and international nutrition programs.

Master of Science/Master of Public Health in Community/Public Health Nursing/Urban Public Health

The Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing offers a dual degree master’s program in community/public health nursing leading to the master’ degrees in nursing and a masters in public health (MS/MPH). The program prepares nurses with the skills to enter leadership careers in community health nursing in a variety of healthcare settings including home health care, public health, and community-based agencies. Course work and a series of practicum experiences provide students with the skills to apply theories and research findings to nursing practice. Those students who pursue this dual MS/MPH degree will gain additional knowledge in the public health sciences with a specific concentration in community health education. Graduates meet the requirements for a certification as an Advanced Public Health Nurse. The dual 57-credit MS/MPH degree can be completed full-time in four semesters. Students have five years to complete the program. Most students earn the degree by attending part-time with courses offered in the late afternoons and evenings. Community health education or environmental and occupational health concentration are also available.
