Jackson State University

The College of Business

Located in Jackson, Mississippi, Jackson State University is a historically black university founded in 1877. The University began as Natchez Seminary, a private school, under the direction of the American Baptist Home Mission Society of New York to provide an education to the Newly freed and underprivileged black population in Mississippi. Popular majors are business marketing, education and interdisciplinary studies. The mission statement as stated by the university is “challenging minds and changing lives”. The Master of Public Health (MPH) Program prepares students for careers as competent practitioners in different areas of public health that include behavioral health promotion and education, epidemiology, and health policy management. Graduates of the MPH program are prepared to respond to the challenges of health disparities in populations and healthcare affecting minorities and others underserved in the population. The MPH program at Jackson State offers a full-time and part-time curriculum to allow flexibility in learning style. Students typically complete curriculum in two and a half years as a full-time program, those choosing a part time program usually require an additional two semesters for completion. Completion of the MPH requires a minimum of 45 semester hours of credit including completion of a field practice internship. Additionally there are five required specialization courses totaling 15 credit hours to advanced skills in public health specializations.

Mississippi College

Graduate School

Located in Clinton Mississippi (just west of the State Capital), Mississippi College is a private Christian college that was founded in 1826. The college is the oldest college in Mississippi and the second oldest Baptist-affiliated College in the United States. Current enrollment is over 5,000 students making Mississippi College the largest private university in the state. The 2015 edition of Best Regional Colleges ranks Mississippi College’s 29th in the South.
